THE TYPEWRITER
TRY IT LIVESelect a specimen — or feed it your own words — then watch the page type itself, key clack by key clack. This is the whole machine: plain text in, phosphor out.
DHTML RELICS
EST. 1999Every late-90s page needed a counter, a webring, and a construction sign. Ours still work — the counter even remembers you.
this page has been under construction since 1999. it’s not a bug, it’s a lifestyle.

BUILD & SOURCE
NO BUILD STEPThe original 1999 demo was driven by a config file and a character scheduler. We kept the soul: plain-text script → engine → screen → synthesized sound. Here is the original build instruction, typed live:
- 01 · SCRIPT
Plain text with newlines and pauses. That’s the entire content pipeline — a .txt file from 1999 still compiles today.
- 02 · ENGINE
A scheduler emits one character per tick with ±35% jitter. Line breaks ring the bell. Nothing more, nothing less.
- 03 · RENDER
Characters land in a
<pre>withwhite-space: pre-wrap. The caret is a span blinking viasteps(1)— the same trick as 1999. - 04 · SOUND
Key clacks are synthesized WebAudio noise bursts; the bell is an 880 Hz sine. Zero audio files. Your modem is not required.
